The neighborhood is named after the Meyer family, who bought and owned 6,000 acres of land in southwest Houston. In the 1950's part of that land was carved out into a development of homes that was touted at the time as the ideal blueprint for a subdivision and it really set the standard for "planned" communities in Houston. Its deed restrictions and architectural standards continue still today.

There are over 2,300 homes in Meyerland and Its location close to the 610 Loop makes it accessible to all areas of Houston, particularly the Texas Medical Center, the Galleria and Downtown. It is attractive to those that work at the Texas Medical Center because the prices in Meyerland are much more affordable than those found in the neigborhoods directly surrounding the Med. Center.

Many of the areas homes were built in the 1950s, so are a one-story brick, ranch style and for those that love the "Mid-Century Modern" styles, Meyerland is the area and has quite a few gems. Pricier new construction has been built in recent years and is still being built. Subdivisions in the Meyerland area include Marilyn Estates, Maplewood, Parkwest, Westbury(most economical home prices) Willowbend and Willow Meadows. There are also some highly rated public schools in particular areas of Meyerland and also many good private schools.
