In 2008, selected Sugar Land as one of the three Houston-area "Top Suburbs To Live Well," noting its affluence despite its large population. In 2006 CNN/Money and Money magazine ranked Sugar Land third on its list of the 100 Best Cities to Live in the United States.

Founded as a sugar plantation in the mid 1800s and incorporated in 1959, Sugar Land is located in Fort Bend County, 20 miles southwest of Downtown Houston and Houston's Medical Center.

This area boasts a wide range of recreational activities including three golf courses and country clubs. The western portion of Sugar Land is home to the 2,200 acre master-planned community of New Territory and the latest 2,018 acre development, Telfair. Sugar Land Town Square is the commercial center of Sugar Land and boasts sidewalk cafes, upscale restaurants, great shopping and the Marriot Conference center which is across from the recently built City hall. Fort Bend Schools are highly rated for the most part and culturally diverse. Homes range in the high 200K to multi million dollar estates.

Sugar Land's median family income is $103,841. and Sugar Land's Schools are part of the highly rated Fort Bend School District (FBISD),  and is one of the reasons Sugar Land has seen tremendous growth along with the fact that many large companies have relocated to the S.W in recent years.

Greatwood is located off U. S. Highway 59 about twenty-four miles southwest of Houston and five miles south of Sugar Land in northeastern Fort Bend County. This master planned community of 2,050 acres has seen a population growth of 61% since 2000.  Amenities include a civic center, country club, golf course, and other recreational facilities. Public schools are in the Lamar Consolidated School District. Homes range from the 200's to 700K+ for those in the Estates section. The most expensive home in the area sold for almost $3 million in 2005.

Between Sugar Land and Sienna Plantation, lies the new master planned community of Riverstone.

The 3,700-acre Riverstone development is poised to be one of the premier master-planned communities in Fort Bend County. Part of Riverstone has a Fort Bend County/Sugar Land zip code, and part has a Missouri City zip code.The development boasts a comprehensive master plan, with a mix of townhomes, single-family homes and custom homes enhanced by resort-quality amenities, excellent schools and a multitude of retail options.

Water features define Riverstone's landscape, with 250 acres of lakes planned and another 500 acres dedicated to recreational complexes, open spaces and parks. The largest economic and entertainment activities are in the areas of south and southeastern Sugar Land and most of the population in the city limits are concentrated here. This area is all master-planned communities and it includes nearly all of First Colony the largest master-planned community in Sugar Land encompassing 10,000 acres. Within First Colony are the fine subdivisions of Sweetwater (surrounding the prestigious Sweetwater Country Club), Avalon, Commonwealth, Sugar Lakes, Sugar Creek and the most recent communities of Telfair and Riverstone.
