West University Place, often called West University or West U for short, is surrounded by the cities of Houston, Bellaire and Southside Place and West University itself surrounds popular Rice Village. West University Place is nicknamed "The Neighborhood City" and is known as the city within a city, as it's located in the heart of the Houston metropolitan area but with a charming, small town, family atmosphere. 

West University Place was incorporated in 1924 because Houston was reluctant to extend power lines that far from the city center so it is known as the City of West University Place.
