Downtown lofts are the "true" warehouse style lofts in older buildings that have been converted. A new growth and rapidly becoming trendy area is EaDo (east of Downtown) within walking distance to the sports venues, Discovery Green and the Houston Pavillions. Homes being built here are 3 story townhomes, many with great Downtown views. Prices for these new townhouses are in the mid to high 200K range. Nearby is the Warehouse District, formerly an industrial zone, the Warehouse District has become popular with it's trendy residents, artists and their studios/galleries.
Downtown is also the economic heart of Houston, with 23% of the city's total office space and more than 150,000 workers. Fourteen of Houston's 23 Fortune 500 companies are Downtown.
For Downtown sports enthusiasts, there's Minute Maid Park, an open-air baseball field with a retractable roof and Toyota Center which is home to the NBA's Houston Rockets, AHL Houston Aeros and also plays host to the nation's top concerts and touring shows.
The 1.8 million-square-foot George R. Brown Convention Center draws hundreds of thousands of visitors annually. Adjacent to the George R. Brown is Discovery Green, a 12-acre park that opened on April 13, 2008.
With its proximity to the George R. Brown Convention Center, Minute Maid Park and Toyota Center, Discovery Green is an ideal location as the city's newest attraction with it's thoughtful planning and "green" design" it's a true city haven. It is steps away from the new Houston Pavillions, a retail, dining, entertainment and office hub.
Also close for those that choose to live in the heart of Downtown, lofts are the norm although there are a couple of luxury high-rises.
